Great Central Road trip July 09 - Gerry Baylee

At the beginning of 2008, we made the big decision to become travelling gypsies so we sold the house, sold the majority of our possessions, told the bosses where to go and are now travelling around this great country of ours in our Nissan Patrol and Australian Offroad Camper Trailer.

Perth to Canberra via Alice and Tassie - by Mike & Amanda Burton

Hi all! We're Mike, Amanda, Jack (9) and Kate (7). We've owned our Odyssey Export Signature for about three years with the grand plan of three big trips before the kids are 'too old' to pull them out of school. Aside from a bunch of shorter expeditions around WA we managed two months to the Kimberleys (wow!) and have just returned from a another two month jobbie to Tasmania and Canberra (why Canberra? - that is another story). The Oddy took us via the Great Central Road, the tail end of the Gunbarrel to Kata Tjuta, the West MacDonnell National Park and Alice Springs. There is something about this remote desert travel - setting up, that a cool glass of white wine or Corona, slouched in the $10 Bunnings chair, AND NO PEOPLE!

It became a little hot (and wet) for us, averaging 43 degrees, 38 at 10pm at night and raining quite a bit! Mistakenly we headed south until the Oodnadatta track decided to flood on us (well, VERY wet anyway), jacknifed twice, clogged the wheel arches - you know there is something heart wrenching about low range 1st, 5km/hr going sideways! However we made it to a friendy Victorian country town, one other visitor next to us who tried to commit suicide in the night with a vacuum cleaner hose and the exhaust! This was difficult to explain to the kids!

Off to the Spirit of Australia and Taswegia! We found Tassie not as friendly to bush camping as it used to be - more emphasis now on fly in, hire the Barina and stay at a chalet. Not to say it wasn't enjoyable, once we got over the rain, cold, 3 inches of snow and the crowds. Bumped into two more Oddys, one in Strahan for New Years! No red roads here, they're white/ grey mud. The trees are all in 'Reserves' - reserved for chopping down later

We hit Melbourne in time for the start of the flood and were dodging storms all the way to Canberra where the last set of BFG Muddies in Oz were living. These new KM2s are pretty good and not toooo noisy. The kids wanted to see Parlaimanet House and predictably the War Museum – it was fantastic! By this time the floods had arriveth everywhere and we were unable to spend our planned two weeks in the Victorian High Country – roads closed, bridges down and my coveted Bush Tracks of Victoria and High Country 4WD Camping was sadly stowed back into the Black Widow drawers.

Mmmm – which way home – lets have some fun and go via the deserts – nooo, Cameron's Corner closed!, Strzelecki Track closed! Bourke closed! Broken Hill closed! So the highway it was, dodging floods until Mildura, Renmark the Flinders Ranges and Skytrek! Now it was 46 degrees again with wind directly from a hot oven. Oh well, we didn't need to get out of the airconditioning for Skytrek . Back home via the Nullaboring, with a short cut from Balladonia via very rough track to Cape Arid and Duke of Orleans for some white beach fun and no rain! But wait - a cyclone cometh and so did the rain! Hit Williams as a storm front wiped out the bowling club roof and so much rain we had to pull over.

What a trip - well done Australian Offroad Campers - 46 degrees to torrential rains and heavy snow, cyclonic winds and we stayed dry (I can't say WARM and dry), and nothing broke except the CTEK charger!

Here’s a tip for cold weather – carry a cheap electric blanket in the Oddy for those rare days you are in a powered site – it warms the soul (literally) and keeps the innerspring dry. We also purchased a small ceramic electric heater for the same reason – this kept the kids warm and bugger the carbon tax! Mind you, now we are back in the land of milk and honey we don’t need such toys…;-)

Plans for the next 3 month adventure are almost completed – April 2012, Perth to Cape York via the Gunbarrel, down to Lake Eyre via Oodnadatta, Birdsville, up to Brissy and a once over for the Oddy at AOC before we head for Cape York, the Gulf, Kakadu, Darwin, Kimberleys and home probably via Ningaloo Reef (ah paradise). Let us know if you want to come J
