The Quintessential Outback – Weaving Your 4WD & Camper Trailer Through the Northern Territory

Australia is known for its outback, often even called by the name. Therefore, to see the real Australia is to witness the outback in all its natural glory. Where does this real outback lie then? Not near Sydney, or Melbourne, or Brisbane, or even Adelaide or Perth, but rather that 20% top slice of Australia known as the Northern Territory with about 1% of Australia’s Population.

Northern Territory is the most barren of areas in Australia but by no means the least interesting. In fact, some people would call it the most interesting of places, very sparsely inhabited, full of untouched and unspoiled natural beauties, and still maintaining aboriginal tribes that have eluded much of the influence of the western world. It is adorned by meteorite craters, canyons, and valleys and is also the residence of many species of animals – including kangaroos and crocodiles, of course.

Darwin,a cosmopolitan city, sits at the northernmost coastal edge of Northern Territory while Alice Springs sits at the southernmost – also known as the Red Center area. In between – a stretch of about 1500 Km – is pure outback. The Stuart highway that connects Darwin and Alice springs is a charming stretch around which are dispersed many interesting sites. The famous Uluru (Ayers Rock) and the Kings Canyon are to the west of Alice springs. The Red Center is where those famous tall red rocks lie that everyone thinks of when they think of the Australian outback. The area closer to Darwin boasts the Arnhem Land, which is aboriginal land as well as the famous Kakadu National Park, where both freshwater crocodiles and saltwater crocodiles roam free.

Most people choose to travel to the Northern Territories between October and March, as this is the rainy season and the time when the red desert is sprinkled with fresh green and the upper part is lush. There is also less dust blowing around, which can be more of a nuisance when experienced than when imagined.

If there were an ideal place to off road for a truly memorable experience in Australia, it would very likely be the Northern Territory. Many people brush their everyday mundane lives aside for a week or two or even more to tackle this mouth-watering challenge and witness nature in its purest and most humbling form. A solid 4WD camper trailer and a top-notch camper trailer to go along is the choice of many travelers to the Northern Territory. This kind of experience is what the camper trailers are made for – to give you independence and peace of mind when you are far away from civilization.

For people looking to do the real thing, Brisbane to Alice Springs is a 30-35 hour drive (around2,500 KM) and Alice Springs to Darwin is an 18 hour drive (1,500 KM). But of course, there are many fascinating distractions along the way to ensure that you don’t get from Brisbane to Darwin in the aforementioned time.
